Finding Motivation For Sport: That's How It Works With The Weaker Self

In order to be successful in sports, you need to find motivation for yourself. This is the only way you can increase your fitness level and make progress. It's not always easy, because after a hard day's work it's hard to pull yourself together to go to the studio. It's raining, it's cold, so I prefer to stay in a warm apartment. You can still drive tomorrow, or at the weekend.

We have to find motivation because without it we can't do it, so we need strategies to get out of the house and not stay on the sofa. In order to outwit the inner bastard, we should know how our brain works so that this strange animal doesn't take control. Why is it so difficult to go to the gym anyway?

Good intentions alone are not enough

The part of our brain that develops good intentions is in the left front brain area. However, the signal to leave is given by the right posterior region, which is poorly connected to the anterior region. The good intention comes to nothing and you stay in front of the television.

We humans love to stay in our comfort zone because change means danger and uncomfortable feelings. Safety is everything, we learned that from our ancestors. It is therefore important to associate positive feelings with the sport so as not to think about stress, overwork, and exertion. Finding motivation and striving for a concrete goal is the solution.

Good resolutions are often formulated too vaguely because if you decide to do more sport in the future, it is not very specific. What does "in the future" mean and what does "more" mean? Which sport are we talking about here? Vague resolutions cannot be kept. If you don't know exactly what you want to create, it will be difficult. Only with a concrete goal and a precise plan can something be put into practice. Then you can find enough motivation.

Goals have to be specific

In order to achieve a goal, it must have certain characteristics that are easy to understand. You want to know where you stand and what you still have to do to get there.

• The goal must be realistic because you also want to achieve it. If you expect a well-trained body after two training sessions, or if you plan to lose 10 kilos in one week, you are wrong. So always ask yourself whether what you set out to do can be achieved.

• It should be specific and worded precisely so that you know where the journey is going. For example, 30 minutes of cardio training on the ergometer, at level 12, without stopping.

• Everyone who sets a goal should fully support it, otherwise it will not motivate. Accept your goal and stick to it.

• How do you know whether the goal has really been reached? If it is measurable because if a goal cannot be checked against specific quantities, it cannot be achieved.

• By when do you want to have reached your goal? The goal only becomes concrete when it is scheduled. So you could plan to do the thirty minutes of cardio training at level 12 after half a year.

Don't aim too high

Goals that are too high tend to demotivate because the sense of achievement is a long way off. There are no positive feelings because a six-pack or a bodybuilder's figure cannot be achieved in two weeks. In order to stay motivated in the long run, you should set yourself lower hurdles in order to achieve sub-goals. Goals must not be too far away, because then you don't pull yourself together. Staying healthy is a great goal, but nobody puts on their running shoes for that. We need an immediate reward.

Sports motivation can be divided into two types.

• Intrinsic motivation comes from within. We only go to the sport for ourselves and do not need any outside support. Good feeling is the reason for physical activity. You feel comfortable in your own skin and are proud of your progress.

• Extrinsic motivation needs external influences, for example when the athlete is preparing for a competition. This only motivates in the short term as everything focuses on that specific goal. When you prepare for a fun run, the motivation comes from outside. A friend wants to run with you, you get a t-shirt and a medal. But that doesn't motivate you in the long run.

It depends on the motivation from within

So let's focus on the motivation from within. How can you make sure you really hit the ground running, even after a hard day's work?

Here's how to find motivation:

• First, whatever sport you choose should be fun. Only then will you stay on the ball. It helps to make a commitment. It's more fun with a training partner because a time appointment obliges. You don't want to leave your partner alone.

• Tell others about your activities and progress, because recognition and skepticism are good motivators. Now you don't give up your plan so quickly because you now have an "audience".

• Make your workout a ritual that is firmly integrated into everyday life. That means saying no sometimes and letting a date go, both professionally and privately.

• Look for the right music, because it's easier to train with music because images and feelings are created in your head. Who doesn't remember the famous Rocky music? With sports-oriented music, motivation can be found and maintained.

Increase performance slowly, with fun

There's no shortage of fun, so just take some selfies and share them on your account, wherever. Recognition will not belong in coming. Photos are always useful because they document your progress. After a while, you can clearly see the difference. Good athletes document their performance to see where they stand. The program can be easily adjusted with the help of a trainer or training partner.

Don't be too perfect in the beginning, because that's not necessary. Athletic performance increases gradually. If you approach things playfully, you will automatically get better. Instead, bring variety to your training program with different sports and different workouts.

A good sports program includes breaks and appropriate regeneration. A lot doesn't help much, this is especially true when it comes to sports. Schedule days when you're actively resting, like going for a walk or stretching.

You can find motivation in many ways, mostly it's the little things that give the extra kick. How about a cool shirt for the gym or new running shoes that will make you feel like you're walking on clouds? The right outfit provides motivation. Especially in sports, you should reward yourself when a partial goal has been achieved.

A balanced diet is part of it

Sport and healthy nutrition belong together because if you eat healthily, you will reach your goal faster. That doesn't mean that you have to give up your beer or a piece of chocolate completely, but enjoy it in moderation. Do a bit of nutrition, because that is also motivating. It is important to know how each food affects the body so that a deficiency does not occur. With a balanced diet, you are guaranteed not to go wrong.

You can find additional motivation on the Internet by participating in forums on the topic or by watching inspirational videos on YouTube. Here you will find many like-minded people who are on a similar path.

With the right methods and goals, the weaker self has no chance. Keep at it, it's worth it.
